PEDRO’S BURRO

Pedro and his Papa head to town to choose a burro in this new tale for fledgling readers from the author of the popular Biscuit series. Should they get one that will pull a wagon well, or one that can carry burdens? Both, says Papa—“We must find a burro that is just right.” There are many burros in the market, though—all looking remarkably good-natured in Estrada’s sunny, simply drawn country scenes—so which to choose? As it turns out, the “just right” burro chooses them, and showing enough personality for two, capers along behind them on the way to its new home, braying out hearty Hee-haws. Expert fare for individual reading. (Easy reader. 5-6)

HERE COMES SPRING

AND SUMMER AND FALL AND WINTER

Readers journey through the seasons with puppies whose behavior resembles that of preschoolers. They dodge falling apple blossoms in spring, have a picnic with friends in summer, pick apples and jump in piles of leaves in fall, and have a snowball fight in winter. Murphy (Caterpillar’s Wish, p. 454, etc.) captures the joy and surprises inherent in the arrival of the seasons, making this book a real heartwarmer. The bright coloring of her illustrations engages readers, as the puppies find a new adventure around every corner; the text is a terrific one to read a loud, subtly conveying with humor some time-honored lessons on ecology, sharing, and cooperation. (Picture book. 3-5)

EGGDAY

Dunbar (Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep, 1998, etc.) joins Helme Heine (The Most Wonderful Egg in the World, 1983) and Mary Jane Auch (The Easter Egg Farm, 1992) in serving up with gusto a cast of unusual egg producers. When Dora the duck announces “Tomorrow is Eggday,” Pogson the pig, Humphrey the horse, and Gideon the goat are puzzled as to how they will lay a pig egg, a horse egg, and a goat egg in their respective efforts to win the contest. The instructive Hetty Hen, a true egg-layer, quickly sets them straight, lending her own eggs, which they decorate for the contest. As expected, Dora the duck’s own egg hatches overnight, and she declares a new holiday—Duckling Day. Cabrera transforms the farmyard plot with a pleasingly free-form style and candy-bright colors. Every page bristles with color; brush strokes, dots, blots, and thumbprints create multi-layered scenes that fairly sing. (Picture book. 3-6)
