SHADOWS by April Pulley Sayre

KIRKUS REVIEW

Shadows are a scientific phenomenon often studied in the early elementary grades, because all the materials for experimentation are readily at hand. Sayre (Army Ant Parade, above, etc.) offers a poetic text that follows a pair of children through an action-filled day at the beach and a park as they investigate all sorts of shadows. The rhyming couplets are creatively set with one action or descriptive word receiving special treatment on each page, adding an additional depth to the work’s excellent design. Though the text is playful and short, it actually imparts quite a bit of scientific information, including an idea for a simple experiment outlining shadows on the playground with chalk. The attractive acrylic paintings by Stevenson (The Ticky-Tacky Doll, not reviewed, etc.) are filled with the bright golden hues of sunshine and the cool blues and purples of shadows, with all the action flowing smoothly from left to right. A first choice for larger public library collections and school libraries, this work outshines Robert Louis Stevenson’s “My Shadow,” the standard poem on the subject. (Picture book. 3-8)
