KIRKUS REVIEW

Luther is a triceratops (you can tell by the horn on his nose). He and his best (human) friend, the narrator, have a great time getting ready for trick-or-treat together. At first, Luther is scared of his friend’s wolf costume; then he remembers it’s his friend. At first he’s afraid of the other trick-or-treaters, but his friend allays his fears. Unfortunately, there‘s a bully dressed as Dracula stealing everyone’s treat bags. The narrator tries to scare the meanie, but loses his candy too. Luther overcomes his fear and ROARS, scaring the bully and winning everyone’s candy back for them. Every young boy’s dream of having a dino-pal is given life in this humorous tale. The boldly colored painting much like Petrone’s work on The Plumply, Dumply Pumpkin (2001) swirl the story along. The ironic twist of the monster being scared makes this a perfect, not-too-scary Halloween tale about overcoming fears for young ghosts and goblins. (Picture book. 3-6)
