A little girl leads her friends on an outing but follows them home. Croakie Crow, Barry Bear, Honey Bunny, Ginger Giraffe, Dashie Doggy, Heddy Hedgehog and Itty Bitty Kitty are Franny’s seven friends. One day Franny announces they’re going on an outing and everyone follows her down the path with Itty Bitty Kitty at the end. After a break for juice and buns, Franny leads them on an expedition up and down a hill with Itty Bitty Kitty and Heddy valiantly trying to keep up. When Itty Bitty Kitty and Heddy stumble and roll into a hole, Franny and the others don’t even notice. But as Franny decides it’s time to go home, she discovers her two friends are missing. A frantic search ends with Itty Bitty Kitty and Heddy rescued and Franny realizing that sometimes a good leader needs to follow. Charming line-and-watercolor illustrations feature the very cute friends and their fearless leader on an innocent outing slightly reminiscent of Christopher Robin and his own bevy of stuffed pals. The simple plot provides a lighthearted lesson in the responsibilities of friendship. (Picture book. 3-6)

Sure to soothe anyone who’s ever fretted about what’s out there in the dark.
In this follow-up to Wolfboy (2021), an innovative art technique jazzes up a familiar narrative.
After a long night of playing, Wolfboy and his rabbit friends head home. They hope to arrive before moonset, so Wolfboy advises that they use a shortcut “through the lair of the GRUMBLE MONSTER.” As the title suggests, Wolfboy is the one scared by this plan, not the rabbits. Harkness uses perspective to make Wolfboy and the rabbits seem very small as they enter the forest. Wolfboy thinks he sees the monster lurking behind trees, but the rabbits reassure him otherwise (those “claws” are just branches, and that “tail” is just a bramble vine). Readers, however, will notice parts of the monster’s large body in the foregrounds of the illustrations, unseen by the characters. The pacing recalls Julia Danielson and Axel Scheffler’s The Gruffalo, as the monster is revealed bit by bit, and when Wolfboy and the rabbits finally meet him, he’s not so scary after all. This twist brings to mind stories like Rachel Bright’s Love Monster (2012) or even Andrew Clement and Yoshi’s Big Al (1991), but the distinctive artwork sets Harkness’ picture book apart. The Claymation-like illustrations, which Harkness explains in a note he created using a virtual-reality headset, sculpting each page “in much the same way I would sculpt with real clay,” have a 3-D effect, like stills from stop-motion animation. An upbeat tale with a much-needed message: Imagination and positivity can save the day.
In this picture book from pop star Kevin Jonas and his wife, TV personality Danielle Jonas, a rainy day forces a child to find an alternate way to enjoy the beach.
Family beach day is one of Bella’s favorite things. She loves splashing in the waves, jumping from rock to rock, and building sand castles. Today, however, the weather isn’t cooperating, but Bella isn’t upset. “It will just have to stop raining. That’s all.” Disappointment sets in when her family tells her that beach day is off. Teary Bella rejects suggested indoor pastimes like board games, musical jam sessions, or reading stories together, and she retreats to her room. Dejected, Bella consoles herself with her stuffed bunny, Mr. Bonkers, until her parents and sister, Emma, knock on her door with a surprise: “BEDROOM BEACH DAY!” With just a few household items—a big lamp for the sun, a fan for the ocean breeze, a blue blanket for water, and pillows for rocks—and a large dose of imagination, Bella’s bedroom is transformed. A flexible attitude from all helps Bella—and readers—realize that things may not always go as planned…but sometimes they can be even better than we expected.
