Mr. Davies, a spry little terrier, decides to go along with his neighbor, a young mother, when she takes her baby for a stroll. All proceeds smoothly until the dog starts pestering various ducks and cats and bicyclists he encounters. Mr. Davies is put under house arrest (he is tied to his dog house) but makes a heroic escape anyway. The neighbor comes up with a simple solution--a leash. Voake (The Three Little Pigs, 1992, etc.) is on to something here. Mr. Davies is a jolly canine, ready for a good time and meaning no harm, clearly capable of further lawless adventures. He's a charmer. Voake's watercolors are shyly simple and expressive, with a touch of Jules Feiffer to them. Her attractive handlettered text looks like something a typewriter with personality might have tapped out. Readers will want to take Mr. D. for a walk anytime; Voake would be wise to unleash him again soon. (Picture book. 3-7)
