KIRKUS REVIEW

Troubled days for ever-jittery Ellie Haskell of Chitterdon Fells, home to more than its share of oddball characters (How to Murder Your Mother-in-Law, etc.). Some of them are, like Ellie, members of the town's Library Leaguespit-polished bachelor Brigadier Lester-Smith; cake-baking Gladstone Spike, husband of Eudora, the vicar of St. Anselm's; mini-skirted, divorced Bunty Wiseman, et al. Ellie, mother of twins and wife of handsome restauranteur Ben, shares with most of the village females a passion for romance novels and an adoration for Karisma, the best known of the hunks who decorate their covers. The sudden death (natural causes?) of librarian Miss Bunch, on the 100th anniversary of a curse laid on the library by Hector Rigglesworth, inspires the idea of a bronze monument and a fund-raising drive to pay for it. Guess who turns up, in the gorgeously toned flesh, to sign autographs and make money for the cause? Karisma, of course, shepherded by his agent, Evangeline Swabucheronetime owner of the escort service that brought Ellie and Ben together. There are motives other than charity at play here, and a sensational secret to be kept under wraps, not to mention another corpse or two. The plot is porridge, the suspense nil, but lovers of English eccentrics and their archly comic antics will have fun with this one. Others may take comfort in the mercifully restrained participation of Miss Bunch's dog Heathcliff.
