In the same format as their Ladybug (1992), the Bernhards present another interesting and useful insect. A lucid, straightforward text describes the dragonfly's ancient lineage, present diversity, and life cycle and mentions its role in the folklore of several areas of the world. Durga Bernhard's bold, distinctive style is skillfully adapted to the needs of a simple science book, with insects and other details stylized yet represented with an eye for their significant features that makes them easily recognizable. Her striking color contrasts and innovative designs support--rather than compete with--the information here, while judicious captions turn up in just the right places. Unusually engaging and effective. Glossary. (Nonfiction/Picture book. 4-9)
