KIRKUS REVIEW

Poor Santa--he's crawling into bed after tucking in his weary reindeer when he spies Harvey's gift, still in his sack. Harvey lives very far away; but since his parents are too poor to buy presents, Santa puts on his coat over his pj's and sets out, on foot. Several people help him, each with different transportation--plane, jeep, motorbike, skis, etc.; each goes only a little way before being stopped by snow and ice. In the end, Santa makes it up a cliff to the Slumfenburger's isolated cottage, fills Harvey's stocking, and sets off home. Burningham's simple narrative is the more disarming because he reports Santa's labored progress in an earnestly childlike style; but best are his illustrations--wry closeups of Santa and his helpers, and lovely, subtly modulated panoramas of earth and sky. A nice touch is summarizing Santa's eventful return journey on a single wordless spread, an invitation to young "readers" to share in the narration. Handsome and original: an entertaining addition to the Christmas shelf. (Picture book. 3-8)
