Silly suspense from Robards (To Trust a Stranger, 2001, etc).
Carly Linton never expected the first thing she’d see when she moved back to her hometown was her ex-boyfriend’s butt. And it’s a wonderful sight. Even though Matt Converse, former bad boy, is now sheriff, he obviously doesn’t spend much time wolfing down crullers and coffee. But Carly hasn’t had much use for men since she divorced her cheating husband. Instead, she and friend Sandra plan to open a B&B right here in the spooky old house her granny left her. But first Matt has to explain why he was on hands and knees in the crawl space under her porch, and why the house is in such bad shape. He hems and haws. Could be teenage vandals who tipped over the rolltop desk. Or could be a murderer lurking out there in the woods. A woman has disappeared, but Matt doesn’t know whether she’s dead or what. Being the kind of hero usually found in much less expensive categories of romance, he plans to protect Carly and her much more sensible friend Sandra, who’s already thinking about moving back to Chicago. Carly is supermiffed but soon ready for a romp with Matt, whose years of experience have turned him into a masterful lover—and, after getting laid six ways from Sunday, she calms down a little, though the plot gets crazier. Hey, who tied up Sandra in the bathtub? The same guy who keeps skulking around the woods out back and making Carly scream? Every time she screams, Matt comes to the rescue waving his gun and his erect organ, in that order. Carly feels better soon! But disturbing memories surface: Did DingDong the Donkeyman really chloroform and rape the girls at the orphanage where her drunken mother dumped her? Is he the one who’s after her?

A smoke jumper who puts her life on the line every fire season has more to fear this year than fire.
A member of the Missoula smoke jumpers since she was 18, Rowan Tripp is tough and gorgeous, proud to be a member of a close-knit team that fights fires all over the West. But last year her partner was killed in a bad jump, and now his girlfriend Dolly is blaming his death on Ro. When Dolly sprays Ro’s room with pig’s blood, she’s fired from her cooking job on the base, stepping up their enmity. Although Ro takes comfort from her new relationship with rookie Gulliver Curry, an erudite Californian with a penchant for firefighting, she’s shocked to find Dolly’s charred body at a fire scene. An IOU from a cute stranger gets complicated in this fun story about family, loyalty, and taking charge of your own life.
Fixie Farr, as her nickname suggests, has always loved to fix things. Most of her fixing is confined to her family's West London store, Farr’s, which she's run with her mother since her father’s death. Her siblings, Jake and Nicole, are mostly useless, and Fixie knows it’s up to her to protect her dad’s legacy. When she’s at a coffee shop one day, a man asks her to watch his laptop. While he’s away, the ceiling above his table caves in, and Fixie can’t stop herself from leaping into danger to save the computer. Shocked by her willingness to save the day at the risk of her own safety, the laptop’s owner, Seb, promises her a favor and writes an IOU on a coffee sleeve. Fixie never intends to cash in the favor—after all, she doesn’t know Seb at all, and she’s perfectly capable of handling everything herself—until the love of her life, Ryan, needs a job. Ryan was Jake’s best friend growing up, and Fixie’s had an enormous crush on him her whole life, even after he moved to LA to become a movie producer. But now he’s back in London, and she wants him to stay…so she musters up the courage to contact Seb and redeem the IOU for a job for Ryan. However, it turns out that she and Seb aren’t quite done with each other, and they keep finding more opportunities to owe each other favors. As Fixie tries to work out her feelings for Seb, assert herself to her siblings, and save her family’s store, will she finally be able to stop fixing other people’s lives and start focusing on her own? Kinsella (Surprise Me, 2018, etc.) creates a charming story full of quirky characters and laugh-out-loud dialogue. Fixie is a likable character, one readers will root for as she learns to take control of her own life.
