Urban faerie killers, star-crossed lovers, rival courts and a spot of Shakespeare vie for center stage in this sequel to Wondrous Strange (2009). Kelley’s rehearsing for the role of Juliet and dealing with her intrusive birth mother—the faerie queen Mabh—and nightmares that are actually glimpses into the grisly deaths her boyfriend Sonny, a faerie changeling, metes out to the evil Wild Hunt. Then things get really complicated when leprechauns—menacing, drunk sadists—come after her. Kelley finds herself in Faerie and then back in New York City in a battle for her life and must come to terms with her own heritage and the surprising truth of Sonny’s. Fans of the first volume will especially relish the ending, which hints at darker things to come. Livingston has tweaked—and made grimmer—Celtic legend and lore enough to keep readers interested, and the pedestrian prose and predictable romantic elements (he thinks she likes Fenn! she worries he’s over her!) don’t detract too much from a better-than-average entry in the Urban Faerie genre. Amid a war and rising civil unrest, a young thief discovers the shocking power within her that sparks a revolution.
At 17, Mare knows that without an apprenticeship or job, her next birthday will bring a conscription to join the war. She contributes to her poor family’s income the only way she can, stealing from the Silvers, who possess myriad powers and force her and her fellow Reds into servitude. The Silvers literally bleed silver, and they can manipulate metal, plants and animals, among many other talents. When Mare’s best friend, Kilorn, loses his job and is doomed to conscription, she is determined to change his fate. She stumbles into a mysterious stranger after her plan goes awry and is pulled out of her village and into the world of Silver royalty. Once inside the palace walls, it isn’t long before Mare learns that powers unknown to red-blooded humans lie within her, powers that could lead a revolution. Familiar tropes abound. Mare is revealed as a great catalyst for change among classes and is groomed from rags to riches, and of course, seemingly kind characters turn out to be foes. However, Aveyard weaves a compelling new world, and Mare and the two men in her life evolve intriguingly as class tension rises. Revolution supersedes romance, setting the stage for action-packed surprises.

Eighteen-year-old Emilia di Carlo and her twin sister, Vittoria, have a secret: They are streghe, trained from a young age to use magic. Emilia is as introverted and romantic as her sister is bold and irreverent, but they share a love of good food and a disregard for their grandmother’s warnings about the devil and his brothers. Known as the Malvagi or Wicked, the seven princes of Hell have not been seen in years until tragedy strikes and a foray into forbidden magic accidentally summons the Prince of Wrath: Three witches—including Vittoria—are dead, and Emilia is desperate to avenge her sister and stop the killings. Rich worldbuilding constructs a post-unification Kingdom of Italy in which witches, demons, and shape-shifters live—and battle—among oblivious humans in a society strongly influenced by the Catholic brotherhood in its midst. Several significant plot points unfold in a Capuchin monastery and its eerie catacombs, and the brotherhood's conflation of witchcraft with the devil is emphasized throughout. Most characters are cued as White—Emilia and her sister have brown eyes and hair and olive skin—while the dark-haired Wicked have golden skin.
