KIRKUS REVIEW

After saving the small town of Grim Hill from evil in three previous books, spunky eighth-grader Cat jumps at the chance to get away in an exchange program with her junior high’s sister school in Sweden. When her single mother can’t foot the expense, the teen concedes to letting her magically inclined younger sister, Sookie, tag along and staying part of the time with their Great Aunt Hildegaard, who will pay the bill. Unfortunately, Cat can’t outrun danger, especially after learning that she comes from a long line of witch hunters. With the help of her multicultural classmates and a band of trolls on Walpurgis Night (a Halloween-like celebration with ancient origins), Cat wins back Sookie from a coven of witches and thwarts their attempt to drown the teens at their bonfire as vengeance for the child accusations during the country’s largest witch hunt in the 17th century. While the young teens often talk beyond their years in this light fantasy, the fascinating look at Sweden’s history and culture makes it an entertaining and worthwhile read. (Magical adventure. 9-12)
