NAVAJO ABC by Luci Tapahonso

NAVAJO ABC

Age Range: 7 - 9

KIRKUS REVIEW

``A DinÇ Alphabet Book'' is the subtitle of this attractive, confusing presentation of aspects of Navajo culture. Problems arise from the outset: ``Aa Arroyo/Bb Belt/Cc Cradle board.'' All but five words appearing with the initial letters are English, not DinÇ. Only in a pronunciation guide and glossary at the end do persistent readers learn that the DinÇ word for arroyo is bikooh. The usual ABC audience will be disoriented, but even older children may not know that on the page for ``Oo 'OoljÇÇ' '' they're supposed be looking at the moon in the softly colored drawing and not the mountain. Much care graces Tapahonso's debut, but it's bound to be misunderstood. (Picture book/nonfiction. 7-9)
