KIRKUS REVIEW

When summer is over, Ben is reluctant to return to school and frets over all the bad things that could happen on his first day in second grade. His friends may not remember him. He could fall asleep on the bus and miss his stop. He could get asked a really hard question. Ben's worries are abetted by his big sister, Hannah, who is quick to point out that his teacher is mean and keeps a giant tarantula in the closet. But when the first day of school actually arrives, Ben is relieved to find out that all the things he worried about don't come to pass. Cheerful, childlike illustrations will help draw readers into a book that tries to ease the real fears young children have about school. But the issue of sibling rivalry--which looms large over this story--is evaded, making for a less than satisfying resolution. A solid but unremarkable book. (Picture book. 5+)
