It’s 2049, and 25-year-old Rose accepts a dangerous assignment from Damien, her master-of-the-universe boss, who promises that she and her mother will be set with income and housing for life in a precarious, ever warming world if she succeeds. On her mission, she’ll continue as a sex worker alongside five other women while keeping an eye on Damien’s interests in a new, secretive project. Meanwhile, Grant Grimley just wants to escape the reach of his family’s vast wealth, a legacy created from centuries of extraction. He accepts a teaching job that guarantees to get him off the grid. Rose and Grant, both Americans, arrive at a camp in the Canadian wilderness, a frigid frontier of sorts, where a renowned architect seeks to build a refuge from climate catastrophe. Not too far off, a group of women—American soldiers and scientists—is creating a sanctuary of their own to survive an imperiled planet. It's a smart setup. The author has imagined an array of futuristic ideas stemming from our present, including a next-generation smartphone that’s implanted as a chip behind people's ears at birth and a Floating City off Boston’s shores where the elite live in bliss while the rest of the population deals with worsening hurricanes and wildfires. But this creativity doesn’t quite pay off. There’s a decades-old oil ban in place, for example, but its geopolitical consequences barely surface. The chip means more connectivity—and surveillance—than ever before, but this doesn’t much impact the story. Some characters lack complexity, and their backstories, once revealed, are underwhelming. However, the book has a soul that generates momentum. It’s committed to the bonds of family, the ones we are born into and the ones we choose, as a way forward in an increasingly chaotic world.

A massive feel-good technology firm takes an increasingly totalitarian shape in this cautionary tale from Eggers (A Hologram for the King, 2012, etc.).

Twenty-four-year-old Mae feels like the luckiest person alive when she arrives to work at the Circle, a California company that’s effectively a merger of Google, Facebook, Twitter and every other major social media tool. Though her job is customer-service drudgework, she’s seduced by the massive campus and the new technologies that the “Circlers” are working on. Those typically involve increased opportunities for surveillance, like the minicameras the company wants to plant everywhere, or sophisticated data-mining tools that measure every aspect of human experience. (The number of screens at Mae’s workstation comically proliferate as new monitoring methods emerge.) But who is Mae to complain when the tools reduce crime, politicians allow their every move to be recorded, and the campus cares for her every need, even providing health care for her ailing father? The novel reads breezily, but it’s a polemic that’s thick with flaws. Eggers has to intentionally make Mae a dim bulb in order for readers to suspend disbelief about the Circle’s rapid expansion—the concept of privacy rights are hardly invoked until more than halfway through. And once they are invoked, the novel’s tone is punishingly heavy-handed, particularly in the case of an ex of Mae's who wants to live off the grid and warns her of the dehumanizing consequences of the Circle’s demand for transparency in all things. (Lest that point not be clear, a subplot involves a translucent shark that’s terrifyingly omnivorous.) Eggers thoughtfully captured the alienation new technologies create in his previous novel, A Hologram for the King, but this lecture in novel form is flat-footed and simplistic.

SOMETHING NEW UNDER THE SUN

An admirably eclectic take on environmental dystopia.

An East Coast writer oversees the adaptation of his novel to film in a hellish version of Los Angeles.

Patrick Hamlin arrives in Hollywood to assume a vague role on the set of the movie version of his latest novel. But everything about the process is befuddling—the movie script barely resembles his story, and his role is relegated to listening to the semiphilosophical ramblings of the production assistants and transporting Cassidy Carter, the tempestuous former child actor–turned–B-lister that is starring in the film. Patrick is increasingly alarmed by the things he witnesses: Wildfires flare constantly; everyone drinks a luxe synthetic product called WAT-R that is “the same as water, just a little bit more so.” And there is a mysterious “dementia” that is afflicting people seemingly at random, regardless of age. As the surrealism of the film-set experiences blend with the nightmarishness of LA, Patrick is also coming unglued by developments at home: His emotionally fragile wife and their 9-year-old daughter are staying at an upstate New York commune, where they participate in group mourning rituals as a kind of ecological grief work. It isn’t long before everything in Patrick’s life feels like it’s spiraling toward disaster. Kleeman’s novel is idea-driven, a critique of the artifice of consumerism and Hollywood culture in which that artifice is heightened on each page, from characters talking in polished soliloquies to the ominous ubiquity of WAT-R bottles in everyone’s hands. Everything in this world is deliberately just a little bit off, like the slight telltale warp of a Photoshopped selfie. While some readers might find the novel overly conceptual, it’s undeniably fun to watch Kleeman juggle genre, from mystery to domestic drama, from cli-fi to ghost story.

An admirably eclectic take on environmental dystopia.
