THE FINGER AND THE NOSE

From the Somos8 series

Readers who pick this quirky book will uncover a sweet story of cooperation under all that snot.

A girl, her finger, and her nose work to find common ground in this peculiar picture book.

A funky Spanish import tells the tale of a finger that takes up residence in protagonist Sophie’s nose, with no plans to vacate any time soon. Her parents have warned her that chronic nose-picking will have dire consequences, but she just can’t resist, and eventually, her finger—named Tim—turns the nose into a cozy home. Sophie’s nose expands to accommodate the finger’s various activities until she realizes that her nose is in danger of reaching the ground. Her parents are present through her crisis but gently encourage her to figure out a solution on her own. Sophie and her finger practice creative problem-solving to ensure that everyone feels satisfied. Gómez’s bright and playful doodles prevent this story from straying too far into gross-out territory. A cutaway drawing of the plush and stylishly decorated interior of Sophie’s nose is simultaneously charming and disgusting. The texts in the Spanish and English editions differ noticeably, though the message of working collaboratively to overcome conflict shines through in both. Characters are all depicted as white.

ISABEL AND HER COLORES GO TO SCHOOL

Readers will root for Isabel and her colorful new beginning.

A first-day-of-school story steeped in vibrant imagery.

Isabel is anxious about her first day at Honeytree Elementary. Isabel speaks Spanish and doesn’t understand much English—she is scared of everything that could go wrong. Mami encourages her to be brave, and Isabel joins the class even though the swirl of language in her new classroom sounds harsh to her ears. Isabel compares the sound of English to the cold and stormy hues of her blue and white crayons, and Spanish to the more inviting pinks, yellows, and purples. A friendly student welcomes Isabel, but they have a hard time connecting across their language differences. Coloring time brings Isabel comfort and the realization that she might have a strategy for talking to her new friend that doesn’t require language at all. Isabel finds hope, and the English that surrounds her begins to sound less intimidating. Spanish words punctuate the English narrative throughout, and the full text of the story in Spanish is included on each page in a bright box. True to the title of the book, the pages are filled with colorful and inviting illustrations. Isabel and Mami have brown skin and curly hair, and her new friend presents Black; Isabel’s teacher and other classmates are racially diverse. This story affirms the experiences of English language learners while encouraging empathy for others. (This book was reviewed digitally.)

DANBI LEADS THE SCHOOL PARADE

Imaginative, irreverent, improvisational fun in kindergarten: Danbi shares a burst of “sweet rain,” complete with a rainbow.

All together now: Food, dance, and music combine for magic that transcends language barriers.

The charming cover of this read-aloud captures the Korean protagonist in a commanding pose, balanced on tiptoes, ready to perform. Still, Danbi feels anxious: “On the first day of my new school in America, my heart beat: Boom. Boom.” Her palpable turmoil builds as she tries unfamiliar activities, yet, by lunchtime, her nervous heartbeat evolves into drum rolls cueing Danbi’s creative impulses. Her classmates’ singular reaction to her traditional Korean lunch—“Wow!”—signals the transformative powers of Danbi’s favorite foods, exquisitely presented in tiered containers: “Yams in honey, crystal dumplings…rainbow drops, and half-moon rice cakes dipped in sweet sesame!” Classmates’ attempts to use chopsticks become comical antics; soon, Danbi is leading everyone through recess in spontaneous, triumphant pageantry. Enchanting illustrations dazzle—particularly through the diverse characters’ hair and facial expressions that detail individuals’ unique traits while celebrating the entire cohort. According to the author’s note, the story is inspired by the creator’s own “bicultural identity,” and the endpapers encapsulate an immigrant child’s journey: the poignant departure and the prosaic pleasures of new friends will resonate with readers of all ages.
