KIRKUS REVIEW

Concerned that wolves may lurk in the dark beyond his window, Thomas ventures out with his toy bear, grown to giant size. There actually is a friendly fox, plus a stag, horses (one of them in the hillside's chalk)--and the wind, whose howling ``makes every shadow look[ed] like a wolf.'' Still, indoors again, all is safe. The story is familiar, but the art--its rich color and sparkling highlights reminiscent of Wildsmith--is nicely expressive of the night's mysterious thrill and the cozy security of home and bear. A promising debut. (Picture book. 4-7)
