Payback time for superannuated 60's radical Randall Gatsby Sierra, now a Tarheel p.i. called to Florida by his hometown friend Sarah Diehl, who wants to know what's become of her old lover (and Randy's former best friend) Happy Fox, last written up in tabloid headlines as ``PUNK TO JESUS FREAK.'' Partnered by improbably available reporter Leila Sweeting, Randy takes off for California--his otherwise idyllic path ominously crisscrossing that of the much-wanted Kampground Killer, whom he accidentally bumped into en route to Florida--and finds Happy as advertised, only to be faced by a more surprising and dangerous disappearance. Its resolution will require extensive military hardware before a somber epilogue on Randy's local Kampground. Hill (Ghost Story, 1971) wobbles in pulling all his plotlines together, but this is an ambitious, powerful generational tale for anybody who survived the 60's, or fears that nobody did. A series is promised.
