A man tries to redeem his family’s reputation as neighbors in Keith’s satirical novel.

Joe Roman and his family were perfectly happy on their cul-de-sac in suburban St. Louis until the Minsters moved in across the street. Tim Minster throws a massive Fourth of July party every year, and he seemingly invites everybody in the neighborhood except the Romans. To add insult to injury, the detritus of Tim’s enthusiastic fireworks displays mostly ends up on Joe’s lawn. “I’d asked Tim to move the launching area closer to his house on the other side of the cul-de-sac because a large percentage of the fall-out from the rockets, the cardboard sticks, and chemical debris, were landing on my property. It was getting worse every year as his parties increased in size.” When Joe makes the mistake of commenting about the trash on the neighborhood Facebook group, the Romans find themselves community pariahs—a situation that only worsens over the course of the years as Joe has minor run-ins with other neighbors. Things come to a head when a contentious new movement (called the “Patriotic Mamas and Papas”) to take over the school board adds a political dimension of the conflict. Joe ultimately decides that the only way to reassert his family’s place in the community is to beat Tim at his own game: a full-blown fireworks war. There may be casualties. Keith is a convincing satirist, crafting characters that, while slightly heightened, are nevertheless totally convincing. Here Joe is horrified by his initial conversation with another neighbor, Barney, a divorced cop: “He told me he was a police officer and was assigned to a local SWAT unit and then, speaking softly, he whispered, ‘Don’t tell anyone, but my trunk is full of guns: rifles, shotguns, AR-15s, pistols, Glocks, you name it. Pretty cool, huh?’” The dialogue is overly expository, and Keith never pauses in any scene long enough for the novel’s world to become totally immersive, but the neighborhood dynamics are tense and entertaining. Many readers will likely relate.

Hannah’s new novel is an homage to the extraordinary courage and endurance of Frenchwomen during World War II.

In 1995, an elderly unnamed widow is moving into an Oregon nursing home on the urging of her controlling son, Julien, a surgeon. This trajectory is interrupted when she receives an invitation to return to France to attend a ceremony honoring passeurs: people who aided the escape of others during the war. Cut to spring, 1940: Viann has said goodbye to husband Antoine, who's off to hold the Maginot line against invading Germans. She returns to tending her small farm, Le Jardin, in the Loire Valley, teaching at the local school and coping with daughter Sophie’s adolescent rebellion. Soon, that world is upended: The Germans march into Paris and refugees flee south, overrunning Viann’s land. Her long-estranged younger sister, Isabelle, who has been kicked out of multiple convent schools, is sent to Le Jardin by Julien, their father in Paris, a drunken, decidedly unpaternal Great War veteran. As the depredations increase in the occupied zone—food rationing, systematic looting, and the billeting of a German officer, Capt. Beck, at Le Jardin—Isabelle’s outspokenness is a liability. She joins the Resistance, volunteering for dangerous duty: shepherding downed Allied airmen across the Pyrenees to Spain. Code-named the Nightingale, Isabelle will rescue many before she's captured. Meanwhile, Viann’s journey from passive to active resistance is less dramatic but no less wrenching. Hannah vividly demonstrates how the Nazis, through starvation, intimidation and barbarity both casual and calculated, demoralized the French, engineering a community collapse that enabled the deportations and deaths of more than 70,000 Jews. Hannah’s proven storytelling skills are ideally suited to depicting such cataclysmic events, but her tendency to sentimentalize undermines the gravitas of this tale.

Still, a respectful and absorbing page-turner.

A tender and moving portrait about the transcendent power of art and friendship.

An artwork’s value grows if you understand the stories of the people who inspired it.

What she decides to do with the painting is part of a caper worthy of the stories that Ted tells her. The novel is humorous, poignant, and always life-affirming, even when describing the bleakness of the teens’ early lives. “Art is a fragile magic, just like love,” as someone tells Louisa, “and that’s humanity’s only defense against death.”
