In the First Impressions series, a biography of Turner, whose revolutionary painting style preceded the artists he most influenced, Monet and other Impressionists, by almost a hundred years. In his first book, Kenner provides anecdotes of the artist as a young man; Turner's talent was obvious early on, and unlike many artists, he had the support of his father in pursuing an artistic career. The book follows Turner's growth as a painter and the development of his style, in which the atmosphere of his landscapes often dwarfed the human subjects. Kenner imparts to readers a sense of the importance of art in a world before photography, film, and television, and the artist's roles as documenter—Turner did hundreds of prints to illustrate a European travel guide—and talented celebrity. The text of this book is well-supported by many excellent full-color reproductions of Turner's work, but not of his contemporaries (conspicuously absent is John Constable, who's mentioned often) or the Impressionists. This oversized, handsome book is an excellent introduction to one of America’s great photographers and her work, which influenced generations of others who followed her craft. Rubin (Toilets, Toasters, and Telephones, 1998, etc.) covers Bourke- White’s life chronologically, from her youth, when she wanted nothing more than to be a herpetologist, through her college years, when she first took a photography class, to her subsequent struggle to find her place in a largely male-dominated profession, photojournalism. By the time she was 30, Bourke-White had made her mark, and was able to earn a handsome living as she traveled the world, not only consorting with presidents and princes, but photographing some of the planet’s most wretched places, including concentration camps. Some of her most powerful photographs illustrate the book, and also give an insight into era in which she earned her place as an artist. Rubin makes clear that Bourke-White’s reputation continues to grow, providing researchers and browsers alike with a warm, admiring glimpse of a woman and her times. Marguerite Henry died barely two years ago, after living the life of which most writers dream: She wrote from the time she was young, her parents encouraged her, she published early and often, and her books were honored and loved in her lifetime. Her hobby, she said, was words, but it was also her life and livelihood. Her research skills were honed by working in her local library, doing book repair. Her husband Sidney supported and encouraged her work, and they traveled widely as she carefully researched the horses on Chincoteague and the burros in the Grand Canyon. She worked in great harmony with her usual illustrator, Wesley Dennis, and was writing up until she died. Collins is a bit overwrought in his prose, but Henry comes across as strong and engaging as she must have been in person. Researchers will be delighted to find her Newbery acceptance speech included in its entirety. (b&w photos, bibliography, index) (Biography. 9-12)
