THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES 1979

The favorites finish first this time out: Bellow's roistering "A Silver Dish," Barthelme's "The New Music," a section from Malamud's Dubin's Lives, Styron's "Shadrach," and Singer's "A Party in Miami Beach." Also worthy: Rosellen Brown's good but too self-registering "The Wedding Week"; Lynn Sharon Schwartz's slightly brittle "Plaisir D'Amour"; Silvia Tennenbaums's well-sustained but curiously unmoving "A Lingering Death"; and Herbert Wilner's vividly clinical but sentimental "The Quarterback Speaks to His God." The rest are hardly even in the running: a posthumous, not very good story by Flannery O'Connor, and efforts by Scan Virgo, Kaatje Hurlbut, Rolf Yngve, Peter LaSalle, Lyn Coffin, Ruth McLaughlin, Robley Wilson Jr., Mary Hedin, Annette Sanford, Paul Bowles, Jean Thompson, Maxine Kumin, Louis D. Rubin, and Jayne Anne Phillips. And, though Oates' introduction offers this year's anthology as a tribute to the little-known and small-press-published stories, they are generally the weakest of the lot. The exception — and the highlight of the collection — is alice Munro's "Spelling," little-mag-published and stunning, one of Munro's alert, heart-crumbling Flo and Rose stories (see The Beggar Maid, p. 882), bare and bristly and sadly comic. A largely drab round-up, then, with the few, best stories utterly overshadowing the lesser efforts.

CUTTING FOR STONE

A bold but flawed debut novel.

There’s a mystery, a coming-of-age, abundant melodrama and even more abundant medical lore in this idiosyncratic first novel from a doctor best known for the memoir My Own Country (1994).

The nun is struggling to give birth in the hospital. The surgeon (is he also the father?) dithers. The late-arriving OB-GYN takes charge, losing the mother but saving her babies, identical twins. We are in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1954. The Indian nun, Sister Mary Joseph Praise, was a trained nurse who had met the British surgeon Thomas Stone on a sea voyage ministering to passengers dying of typhus. She then served as his assistant for seven years. The emotionally repressed Stone never declared his love for her; had they really done the deed? After the delivery, Stone rejects the babies and leaves Ethiopia. This is good news for Hema (Dr. Hemalatha, the Indian gynecologist), who becomes their surrogate mother and names them Shiva and Marion. When Shiva stops breathing, Dr. Ghosh (another Indian) diagnoses his apnea; again, a medical emergency throws two characters together. Ghosh and Hema marry and make a happy family of four. Marion eventually emerges as narrator. “Where but in medicine,” he asks, “might our conjoined, matricidal, patrifugal, twisted fate be explained?” The question is key, revealing Verghese’s intent: a family saga in the context of medicine. The ambition is laudable, but too often accounts of operations—a bowel obstruction here, a vasectomy there—overwhelm the narrative. Characterization suffers. The boys’ Ethiopian identity goes unexplored. Shiva is an enigma, though it’s no surprise he’ll have a medical career, like his brother, though far less orthodox. They become estranged over a girl, and eventually Marion leaves for America and an internship in the Bronx (the final, most suspenseful section). Once again a medical emergency defines the characters, though they are not large enough to fill the positively operatic roles Verghese has ordained for them.

Unabashedly over the top at times but, still, a saga that gives rise to as much amusement as it does sober reflection. A...

In a witty, wacky, and endlessly erudite debut, DeWitt assembles everything from letters of the Greek alphabet to Fourier analysis to tell the tale of a boy prodigy, stuffed with knowledge beyond his years but frustrated by his mother’s refusal to identify his father.

Sibylla and five-year-old Ludovic are quite a pair, riding round and round on the Circle Line in London’s Underground while he reads the Odyssey in the original and she copes with the inevitable remarks by fellow passengers. Sibylla, an expatriate American making a living as a typist, herself possesses formidable intelligence, but her eccentricities are just as noteworthy. Believing Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai to be a film without peer, she watches it day after day, year after year, while in the one-night stand with Ludo’s father-to-be, she wound up in bed with him for no better reason than it wouldn’t have been polite not to, although subsequently she has nothing but scorn for his utterly conventional (if successful) travel books. Ludo she keeps in the dark about his patrimony, feeding him instead new languages at the rate of one or two a year, and, when an effort to put him in school with others his age wreaks havoc on the class, she resumes responsibility for his education, which, not surprisingly, relies heavily on Kurosawa’s film. As Ludo grows up, however, he will not be denied knowledge of his father, and sniffs him out—only to be as disappointed with him as his mother is. Hopes of happiness with the genuine article having been dashed, Ludo moves on to ideal candidates, and approaches a succession of geniuses, each time with a claim of being the man’s son. While these efforts are enlightening, they are also futile—and in one case tragic—until Ludo finds his match in one who knows the dialogue of Seven Samurai almost as well as he does.

Unabashedly over the top at times but, still, a saga that gives rise to as much amusement as it does sober reflection. A promising start, indeed.
