It took months, but Vancouver Police Constable Ben Malik finally takes his wife, Amy Robinson Malik, on a honeymoon to nearby Galiano Island. But a romantic escape isn’t in the stars. A private plane crashes into the sea, and they find the pilot dead. The victim is wealthy Vancouver Police Department benefactor Eugene Sokalsky, so Seppo Koskinen, Ben’s temporary boss, orders him back to work as a result. Also affected by the crash is the Sokalskys’ deadbeat son, Mark, a law school dropout who is working for gambling boss Luigi Alzaperi. In the course of the investigation, Ben meets Mark, learns too much about Mark’s roles in his father’s death and Alzaperi’s operation, and is subsequently abducted. When Ben fails to return home, Amy reports him missing. Angered by the slow pace of the police search for Ben, Amy begins her own investigation and soon uncovers the involvement of a dirty cop who pursues her. She goes off the grid while continuing to search for Ben. In Håkanson’s second book in the Amy Robinson series, salon owner Amy proves she can handle much more than a killer haircut—much to her and Ben’s surprise. Unable to trust Ben’s co-workers, Amy skillfully deploys a network of friends and acquaintances to help with the rescue effort. Despite being in captivity for much of the novel, Ben finds ways to ramp up the dramatic tension. Håkanson skillfully uses a layered cast (Mark is an entertaining villain—a spoiled poor-little rich boy who deserves to be fed to the sharks) in this quick-moving adventure. By thinking faster than their pursuers, Amy and Ben make for an appealing couple who are easy to cheer.

The Lizard King, as he calls himself, normally targets lot lizards—prostitutes who work the parking lots adjacent to the rest stops that dot interstate highways. But he’s more than happy to move up to a higher class of victim when he runs across the Sullivan sisters. Danielle, 18, and Gracie, 16, are supposed to be driving from their mother’s home in Denver to their father’s in Omaha, but Danielle has had the bright idea of heading instead to Bozeman, Mont., to visit her boyfriend, Justin Hoyt. Far from home, their whereabouts known to only a few people, the girls are the perfect victims even before they nearly collide with the Lizard King’s rig and Danielle flips him off. The story is sadly familiar, the treatment claustrophobically intense.
Twenty years after Chloe Davis’ father was convicted of killing half a dozen young women, someone seems to be celebrating the anniversary by extending the list.
No one in little Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, was left untouched by Richard Davis’ confession, least of all his family members. His wife, Mona, tried to kill herself and has been incapacitated ever since. His son, Cooper, became so suspicious that even now it’s hard for him to accept pharmaceutical salesman Daniel Briggs, whose sister, Sophie, also vanished 20 years ago, as Chloe’s fiance. And Chloe’s own nightmares, which lead her to rebuff New York Times reporter Aaron Jansen, who wants to interview her for an anniversary story, are redoubled when her newest psychiatric patient, Lacey Deckler, follows the path of high school student Aubrey Gravino by disappearing and then turning up dead. The good news is that Dick Davis, whom Chloe has had no contact with ever since he was imprisoned after his confession, obviously didn’t commit these new crimes. The bad news is that someone else did, someone who knows a great deal about the earlier cases, someone who could be very close to Chloe indeed. First-timer Willingham laces her first-person narrative with a stifling sense of victimhood that extends even to the survivors and a series of climactic revelations, at least some of which are guaranteed to surprise the most hard-bitten readers.
