Movie theaters around the country remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that isn’t stopping studios from releasing new book-to-screen adaptations on streaming services. (In fact, two entries on this list were originally intended for theatrical release, before plans changed.) Stay tuned for Kirkus’ columns on the Jenny Slate–starring movie version of Rebecca Dinerstein’s 2015 novel, The Sunlit Night (premiering July 17), and the second season of the TNT series The Alienist, based on Caleb Carr’s 1997 historical thriller The Angel of Darkness (premiering July 19). Here are four intriguing adaptations to watch before then:

July 3: Hamilton (Film Premiere, Disney+)

Some may be unaware that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s landmark 2015 musical Hamilton, about the most famous treasury secretary of all time, was inspired by a book: Ron Chernow’s Kirkus-starred 2004 biography, Alexander Hamilton. This new movie presents a 2016 stage performance by the original cast, including Miranda as Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Vice President Aaron Burr, and Daveed Diggs as the Marquis de Lafayette and President Thomas Jefferson. It was originally set to be released in theaters next year, but Disney opted to instead put it on their subscription streaming service, Disney+, whose monthly fee, as it happens, costs less than a $10 bill.

July 3: The Baby-Sitters Club (Series Premiere, Netflix)

This 10-episode TV series is based on the much-loved middle-grade books by Ann M. Martin and several ghostwriters, which chronicle the adventures of a group of young girls and their suburban babysitting business. It will certainly appeal to fans of the original books, which were mostly published in the 1980s and ’90s. That audience is mostly in their 40s now, and they’ll appreciate the casting of Clueless’ Alicia Silverstone as the mother of babysitter Kristy Thomas (played by Sophie Grace). But will younger viewers tune in? The trailer obliquely and cleverly addresses this question when Kristy asks her friend Claudia Kishi (Momona Tamada) about a newly purchased, vintage telephone: “Are you sure this thing actually works?...It’s 25 years old.” “It’s iconic,” Claudia says—right before the phone rings.

July 10: Greyhound (Film Premiere, Apple TV+)

Audiences never seem to tire of World War II battle epics, and the last few years saw the release of such films as Hacksaw Ridge, Dunkirk, Midway, and even the horror-infused Overlord. The latest entry is the sea-combat film Greyhound, an adaptation of C.S. Forester’s 1955 novel, The Good Shepherd. It’s written by none other than Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks, who stars as a U.S. Navy commander charged with protecting a convoy of Allied ships against Nazi submarines. Like Hamilton, this movie was intended to be released on the big screen, only to be released on a streaming service—in this case, Apple TV+. Here’s hoping it’s impressive-looking, big-budget battle scenes won’t suffer at a smaller scale.

July 15: Brave New World (Series Premiere, Peacock)

Aldous Huxley’s pioneering 1932 dystopian novel Brave New World is set in a scientifically advanced but deeply conformist society in which most citizens have been drugged into complacency. This new series adaptation is set to premiere with the launch of the NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, and it features Solo’s Alden Ehrenreich as the rebellious John the Savage. The intriguing cast also features Demi Moore, Harlots’ Jessica Brown Findlay, Pitch’s Kylie Bunbury, and Counterpart’s Harry Lloyd—any of whom would make this series worth a look.
