Goodreads users have crowned Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games as the best book ever, Parade reports.
Collins’ young adult novel, published in 2008 by Scholastic, follows Katniss Everdeen, a teenage girl in a dystopian version of North America who competes in a battle royale to the death with a group of other young people, including her former schoolmate Peeta Mellark. The novel is the first in a series of five novels; the most recent installment, Sunrise on the Reaping, was published last year.
The novels formed the basis for five movie adaptations. A forthcoming sixth film, based on Sunrise on the Reaping, directed by Francis Lawrenceand starring Joseph Zada, Mckenna Grace, Elle Fanning, and Ben Wang, is scheduled to premiere in theaters in November.
Coming in at No. 2 on the Goodreads list was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, followed by Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief.
Rounding out the top 10 were Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, George Orwell’s Animal Farm, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series, C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia series, and John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars.
