Dave Eggers is returning to the world he created in his Newbery Medal–winning children’s book, The Eyes & the Impossible.
Knopf Books for Young Readers will publish the author’s The Avalanche Kingdom, illustrated by Shawn Harris, next year, the press announced in a news release. It says the book will feature “singular humor, a thrilling pace, and lyrical writing that will captivate young readers and adults alike.”
Eggers’ The Eyes & the Impossible, published in 2023, tells the story of Johannes, a dog-coyote mix who serves as the eyes for the three bison who are the elders of an urban park. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, which was a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, “One remarkable creature vividly shows readers that ‘there is so, so much to see.’”
The book ended with Johannes and two of his friends, a seagull and a goat, boarding a freighter. The Avalanche Kingdom will tell the story of the trio arriving in a land full of predators determined to make them their prey.
Judith Haut, executive vice president and deputy publisher of Random House Children’s Books, said in a statement, “Dave Eggers has once again created something extraordinary, bringing the same wit, imagination, and emotional depth that made readers fall in love with Johannes in the first place. The result is a joyful, hilarious, and at times profound story that speaks to freedom, friendship, and what it means to live fully in the world.”
Eggers, who became a literary star with his 2000 memoir, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, is the author of several acclaimed novels for adults, including A Hologram for the King, The Circle, and, most recently, Contrapposto, published in June by Knopf.
The Avalanche Kingdom is slated for publication on Feb. 16, 2027.
