Prime Video dropped a trailer for its upcoming miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie.
King’s novel, published in 1974 by Doubleday, follows Carrie White, a lonely high school student in Maine who uses her telekinetic powers to get revenge against her bullies and fundamentalist mother. A critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “King handles his first novel with considerable accomplishment and very little hokum.”
The novel has been adapted for the screen before, most memorably as a 1976 film directed by Brian De Palma, starring Sissy Spacek in the title role. The book also formed the basis for a 1988 Broadway stage musical that closed after only five regular performances.
The new miniseries adaptation is written by Mike Flanagan, who also serves as the showrunner; he previously directed film adaptations of King’s novels Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep and King’s novella “The Life of Chuck.” The new miniseries stars Summer H. Howell (Night of the Reaper) as Carrie; other cast members include Matthew Lillard (Scream), Amber Midthunder (Prey), Samantha Sloyan (The Fall of the House of Usher), and Siena Agudong (Resident Evil).
The trailer opens with shots of Howell crying while looking in a mirror, then walking through a hall in her high school. In a voiceover, she says, “I want to know why. All I ever wanted was to go to school. I never did anything to you. You put in all this effort to make it look like I was your friend. So why? Why not just do that?”
The trailer continues with Howell’s eyes widening in horror, as she discovers a social media account that appears to be impersonating her. Howell says, “I know things aren’t easy for you either. They’re not easy for any of us. And the worst part is that I really could have been your friend.”
Carrie is set to premiere on Prime Video on Oct. 7.
