Elizabeth Castellano’s Save What’s Left is the latest pick for the Good Morning America book club.

Castellano’s debut novel, published Tuesday by Anchor, follows Kathleen Deane, a Kansas woman who moves to a Long Island beach town after her husband of 30 years says he’s unhappy with their marriage. There she fights against a tacky mansion being built next door to her shack.

In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “Clearly, the key requirement for successful beach house ownership is a (possibly illegal) sense of humor. Bring it on!”

In an interview with the East End Beacon, Castellano said the novel was inspired by the beach town where she grew up.

“I wanted to turn the beach read genre on its head, and show the other side of beach town life,” Castellano said. “I love this place, but I know it’s absurd.”

GMA contributor Lori Bergamotto announced the selection on the morning show, then cut to a video of Castellano talking about her book. “Save What’s Left is a comic novel about a woman who fulfills her dream of owning a beach house, only to discover that life in a beach town is nothing like the fantasy she envisioned. It’s less cool breezes and margaritas, and more leaf blowers and anxiety medication. It’s committees and quirky neighbors and all the drama of small-town life, just with a better view.”
