The film adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ The Things We Leave Unfinished has found its director, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Thea Sharrock will helm the movie based on Yarros’ 2021 novel, which tells the story of Georgia Stanton, a woman who moves to her late great-grandmother's home in Colorado after an acrimonious divorce. There she meets Noah Harrison, a romance author who wants to finish her great-grandmother’s half-finished novel. A critic for Kirkus called the book “a charming dual-timeline romance about learning from past mistakes.”
The film adaptation of the novel, which is being developed by Lionsgate, was announced last July, with Arash Amel (Grace of Monaco, A Private War) writing the screenplay and Yarros on board as an executive producer.
Sharrock’s previous films include adaptations of Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You and Katherine Applegate’s The One and Only Ivan. Her latest movie, Ladies First, was released on Netflix last week.
Yarros’ 2019 novel, The Last Letter, is currently in development as a film, and her massively popular Empyrean series of romantasy novels is being adapted as a Prime Video television series with Michael B. Jordan and Yarros among the executive producers.
Yarros shared news of Sharrock’s hiring on Instagram, writing, “I constantly say that The Things We Leave Unfinished is my favorite book, but it’s also one of my favorite adaptation projects. Guys, this team leads with such love, such a spirit of collaboration and joy, and I know that’s going to shine through to the big screen!”
