A zesty, succinct contextualization of the World Trade Center, its seaminess and semiotics, from novelist and academic Darton (Media Studies/Hunter; Free City, 1996). No matter what you think about the aesthetics of Minoru Yamasaki’s gothic-modernist World Trade Center—a heinous mega-blot on the landscape or a “breakthrough in terms of New York’s architectural trademark,” as Ada Louise Huxtable cooed—the real fascination in the twin monsters lies in the machinations that gave them birth. Darton particularly loves the irony of the Port Authority, protector of the region’s ports and creator of the WTC, engineering the mutation of the center “from a superblock speculation specifically mandated for port and international trade functions into a superblock speculation having almost nothing to do with either.” He sardonically traces the evolution of the downtown landscape from the later 19th century within the context of early zoning laws, urban renewal, the ministerings of the Regional Plan Association, the flimflammery of Austin Tobin as head of the Port Authority, the desire of the Rockefellers to leverage the value of family real estate holdings, and the connivance of the New York Times with the lot of them. Darton reads the WTC from many angles, from Le Corbusier to Gaston Bachelard to Marshall Berman (—two monumental structures whose formal relationship gives no indication of their purpose or intent—), but it is power and money that dominate, the small people be damned along with their shops and neighborhoods. The towers speak the language of wealth and vested interests: “Would a desperate gambit like the World Trade Center have been deemed necessary, or desirable, if the Port Authority had taken reasonable care of the port?” Even time hasn’t seen fit to burnish the World Trade Center’s image. There are just too many skeletons in its many closets, and Darton obligingly opens each one to peek inside.

The powerful story of a father’s past and a son’s future.
Atlantic senior writer Coates (The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Road to Manhood, 2008) offers this eloquent memoir as a letter to his teenage son, bearing witness to his own experiences and conveying passionate hopes for his son’s life. “I am wounded,” he writes. “I am marked by old codes, which shielded me in one world and then chained me in the next.” Coates grew up in the tough neighborhood of West Baltimore, beaten into obedience by his father. “I was a capable boy, intelligent and well-liked,” he remembers, “but powerfully afraid.” His life changed dramatically at Howard University, where his father taught and from which several siblings graduated. Howard, he writes, “had always been one of the most critical gathering posts for black people.” He calls it The Mecca, and its faculty and his fellow students expanded his horizons, helping him to understand “that the black world was its own thing, more than a photo-negative of the people who believe they are white.” Coates refers repeatedly to whites’ insistence on their exclusive racial identity; he realizes now “that nothing so essentialist as race” divides people, but rather “the actual injury done by people intent on naming us, intent on believing that what they have named matters more than anything we could ever actually do.” After he married, the author’s world widened again in New York, and later in Paris, where he finally felt extricated from white America’s exploitative, consumerist dreams. He came to understand that “race” does not fully explain “the breach between the world and me,” yet race exerts a crucial force, and young blacks like his son are vulnerable and endangered by “majoritarian bandits.” Coates desperately wants his son to be able to live “apart from fear—even apart from me.”
