This true-crime memoir details the surreal journey of a suburban housewife who spends 13 years shadowing one of the Los Angeles Police department’s top homicide detectives.
In 1982, 35-year-old aspiringauthor Howatt read a newspaper article about 64-year-old Det. John “Jigsaw” St. John of the LAPD winning a Distinguished Service Medal for his work on the recent Freeway Killer case. She felt compelled to contact him to float the possibility of her writing a book about him. This resulting memoir is the result of her spending 13 years by the detective’s side and focuses on two cases on which he worked: the Freeway Killer, which involved multiple men convicted of murdering dozens of young men and boys, and William Bradford, who was convicted of the murders of two young women. The book’s middle section includes black-and-white photos of the victims, mug shots of the killers, St. John himself, and murder scenes, including the interior of a “death van” belonging to one of the convicted Freeway Killers. Howatt largely keeps the focus on St John and his crime-solving process. She also speaks with many people involved, including a particularly illuminating conversation with a convicted murderer’s ex-wife that led Howatt to conclude: “Since he cannot feel love, he cannot make love, so he makes hate. He makes pain. He makes torture. And finally, he makes death.” Although the recollected dialogue can feel stilted, the book shines when Howatt demonstrates her detailed knowledge of how murder cases are solved; one section, for instance, recalls how a shocking coincidence led to Bradford’s arrest. She also includes her mentor’s frequent pearls of wisdom: “St. John once told me a crime scene could tell me more about a killer’s psychology than his own mother.” As one may expect for a true-crime memoir, there’s graphic language and details about deaths that some readers may find upsetting. However, Howatt never embraces sensationalism; she sticks to the facts, while also introducing some humanity via accounts of her interactions with St. John and conversations with people who knew the perpetrators.
