A debut children’s story of how love and faith can combine to help create a family.

It’s 6-year-old Madi’s special day—the anniversary of her adoption—and she’s trying to choose the perfect dress to wear to dinner. Everyone gathers to commemorate her joining the family, in a celebration they call “Madi Gras.” Madi has many questions for her mother about her adoption, and Mom answers them, describing how, after years of hoping and wishing, God answered her adoptive parents’ prayers with her arrival; Madi, Mom explains, was created especially for them as a gift from above. As the day continues, her parents reveal more about what makes them a family—from the passing of Grandma Peggy and the adoption of their pet cat Angel, to Madi’s birth and her first meeting with her beloved cousins. Everyone has a great, colorful evening, which includes, in the Mardi Gras tradition, a king cake. Finally, the family lovingly tucks Madi into bed. Capson intersperses related Bible verses as footnotes throughout this debut children’s book. Lanni’s illustrations of Madi and her family are colorful and fun, and sure to delight both children and adult readers. However, the prose might have benefited from some editing, as some sentences seem to run on a bit too long for a children’s work; as a result, younger kids may have difficulty reading it on their own. Despite this, the book provides a rich, unique way to introduce children to the concept of adoption. The questions throughout the work, as well as a late “Fill Up My Love Cup!” section, let readers address their own adoption experiences, and create a volume that may be treasured by some families for years to come. The book also provides an email address that readers may use to share their own personal stories, and the author is likely to receive many happy tales.

A worthy tale, particularly for Christian families and their adopted children.
