Smith’s hilarious tale recounts the misadventures of a stuffed elephant’s search to discover his “Perfect Match.” Tired of languishing in the toy store, the intrepid pachyderm decides to take fate into his own hands (feet?) and seek out his significant other/owner. Smith’s narrative reads like a kid’s version of a detective story. This, coupled with her illustrations that reveal the true scoop, results in a very funny accounting, with plenty of appeal for older readers who will appreciate the irony. With tongue-in-cheek, Smith has Paisley recount his epic endeavors to discover Miss Right even as he stoutly overcomes harrowing obstacles. Her full-bleed illustrations, full of pattern (flowers for the flowery, gingham for the gingham-clad), offer lots to study in the details. The juxtaposition of Paisley’s brave commentary and his passive reality will leave readers with the giggles. However, humor aside, Smith’s tale of true bliss discovered and dreams achieved sends a heart-warming message that younger readers can treasure. (Picture book.5-8)
