A talented teenage musician explores romance, faith, and music in Philbrick’s (Everbloom, 2017, etc.) coming-of-age novel.
Clive Serkin is a 17-year-old piano prodigy and the son of Claude Serkin, the conductor of the Chicago Philharmonic. He’s bored with his “old, gray-haired, Bach obsessed piano teacher,” Saul Koussevitsky, so he begins taking lessons in secret with middle-aged, world-renowned pianist Clare Cardiff. She recently put her fast-paced, concert-driven life on hold and moved to Chicago after her abusive husband, Nero Cardiff, announced that he wanted them to take a break. As Clive’s romantic feelings for Clare grow, she begins to see him as the son she never had. His already excellent musicianship improves enough to gain him admittance to the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Russia. All the while, Clare grapples with memory lapses, and she’s later diagnosed with early-onset dementia. The diagnosis forces Clare to move back in with Nero, and Clive is left to perform in Moscow without his beloved teacher. Although the story begins with a familiar storyline—a talented child pushed too far by a parent’s dream—Philbrick, in clear prose, builds a story that breaks that mold. It does so with rich music history (including mentions of Clara and Robert Schumann’s relationship), nuanced characters (Nero uses his pottery skills to sculpt a child that he and Clare never had), religious themes, and a website that readers may visit to listen to specific pieces mentioned in the book. Clive and Clare’s “Love born on a bench” is delicately constructed; the two don’t do anything more than hold hands, but their intimacy is strong: “Clive drew close to her with romanticized desire. Her hand fit seamlessly in his as the black piano keys agree with the white ones.” Some scenes discussing religion feel preachy, but most add depth to the story and characters. In one scene, for example, Clare’s sister, Bethany, tells her, “All our lives have transcendent value”—and to Clare, that value is her music.

Deep schmaltz in the Bible Belt.
Christian-fiction writer Martin (The Dead Don’t Dance, not reviewed) chronicles the personal tragedy of a Georgia heart surgeon.
Five years ago in Atlanta, Reese could not save his beloved wife Emma from heart failure, even though the Harvard-trained surgeon became a physician so that he could find a way to fix his childhood sweetheart’s congenitally faulty ticker. He renounced practicing medicine after her death and now lives in quiet anonymity as a boat mechanic on Lake Burton. Across the lake is Emma’s brother Charlie, who was rendered blind on the same desperate night that Reese fought to revive his wife on their kitchen floor. When Reese helps save the life of a seven-year-old local girl named Annie, who turns out to have irreparable heart damage, he is compassionately drawn into her case. He also grows close to Annie’s attractive Aunt Cindy and gradually comes to recognize that the family needs his expertise as a transplant surgeon. Martin displays some impressive knowledge about medical practice and the workings of the heart, but his Christian message is not exactly subtle. “If anything in this universe reflects the fingerprint of God, it is the human heart,” Reese notes of his medical studies. Emma’s letters (kept in a bank vault) quote Bible verse; Charlie elucidates stories of Jesus’ miracles for young Annie; even the napkins at the local bar, The Well, carry passages from the Gospel of John for the benefit of the biker clientele. Moreover, Martin relentlessly hammers home his sentimentality with nature-specific metaphors involving mating cardinals and crying crickets. (Annie sells crickets as well as lemonade to raise money for her heart surgery.) Reese’s habitual muttering of worldly slogans from Milton and Shakespeare (“I am ashes where once I was fire”) doesn’t much cut the cloying piety, and an over-the-top surgical save leaves the reader feeling positively bruised.

Hannah, after eight paperbacks, abandons her successful time-travelers for a hardcover life of kitchen-sink romance. Everyone must have got the Olympic Peninsula memo for this spring because, as of this reading, authors Hannah, Nora Roberts, and JoAnn Ross have all placed their newest romances in or near the Quinault rain forest. Here, 40ish Annie Colwater, returns to Washington State after her husband, high-powered Los Angeles lawyer Blake, tells her he’s found another (younger) woman and wants a divorce. Although a Stanford graduate, Annie has known only a life of perfect wifedom: matching Blake’s ties to his suits and cooking meals from Gourmet magazine. What is she to do with her shattered life? Well, she returns to dad’s house in the small town of Mystic, cuts off all her hair (for a different look), and goes to work as a nanny for lawman Nick Delacroix, whose wife has committed suicide, whose young daughter Izzy refuses to speak, and who himself has descended into despair and alcoholism. Annie spruces up Nick’s home on Mystic Lake and sends “Izzy-bear” back into speech mode. And, after Nick begins attending AA meetings, she and he become lovers. Still, when Annie learns that she’s pregnant not with Nick’s but with Blake’s child, she heads back to her empty life in the Malibu Colony. The baby arrives prematurely, and mean-spirited Blake doesn’t even stick around to support his wife. At this point, it’s perfectly clear to Annie—and the reader—that she’s justified in taking her newborn daughter and driving back north. Hannah’s characters indulge in so many stages of the weeps, from glassy eyes to flat-out sobs, that tear ducts are almost bound to stay dry.
