In 1970s Dublin, the world had not yet changed. Tenants did not dare ask their landladies to repaint their flats; women were not hired as journalists; and priests did not have affairs. Pity poor Louise, then, broke, unemployed and recently abandoned by her priggish English boyfriend. Taking advantage of the free food and wine at a pity lunch paid for by a would-be employer, she drinks way too much and ends up being escorted home by a handsome Canadian monk, Peter, who kisses her goodnight. When he shows up, ostensibly to check on her, they begin the passionate liaison that will set the course of her life. Like their classic predecessors, Héloïse and Abelard, to whom he frequently refers, Peter seeks to educate Louise, an aspiring journalist. Not until tragedy strikes does she smarten up about her life and starts to use contraceptives despite his insistence that doing so compounds their sin. Such pigheaded selfishness is typical of Peter, who treats Louise poorly, blaming her for his lapses and erupting into jealous rages. Only repeated references to his good looks and her newly discovered sexuality explain the ongoing affair. However, it finally helps send her off to a better life, with an unexpected bonus. In graceful, casual prose, Callaghan (Billy, Come Home, 2007, etc.) spins a believable story. But while the author summons ’70s Dublin in telling detail, her Abelard is so bitter and repressed, it’s hard to see the attraction.

When the four adult Madigan children come home for Christmas to visit their widowed mother for the last time before the family house is sold, a familiar landscape of tensions is renewed and reordered.

Newly chosen as Ireland’s first fiction laureate, Enright (The Forgotten Waltz, 2012, etc.) showcases the unostentatious skill that underpins her success and popularity in this latest story of place and connection, set in an unnamed community in County Clare. Rosaleen Considine married beneath her when she took the hand of Pat Madigan decades ago. Their four children are now middle-aged, and only one of them, Constance, stayed local, marrying into the McGrath family, which has benefited comfortably from the nation’s financial boom. Returning to the fold are Dan, originally destined for the priesthood, now living in Toronto, gay and “a raging blank of a human being”; Emmet, the international charity worker struggling with attachment; and Hanna, the disappointed actress with a drinking problem. This is prime Enright territory, the fertile soil of home and history, cash and clan; or, in the case of the Madigan reunion, “all the things that were unsayable: failure, money, sex and drink.” Long introductions to the principal characters precede the theatrical format of the reunion, allowing Enright plenty of space to convey her brilliant ear for dialogue, her soft wit, and piercing, poetic sense of life’s larger abstractions. Like Enright's Man Booker Prizewinning The Gathering (2007), this novel traces experience across generations although, despite a brief crisis, this is a less dramatic story, while abidingly generous and humane.

Powers’ (Orfeo, 2014, etc.) 12th novel is a masterpiece of operatic proportions, involving nine central characters and more than half a century of American life.

In this work, Powers takes on the subject of nature, or our relationship to nature, as filtered through the lens of environmental activism, although at its heart the book is after more existential concerns. As is the case with much of Powers’ fiction, it takes shape slowly—first in a pastiche of narratives establishing the characters (a psychologist, an undergraduate who died briefly but was revived, a paraplegic computer game designer, a homeless vet), and then in the kaleidoscopic ways these individuals come together and break apart. “We all travel the Milky Way together, trees and men,” Powers writes, quoting the naturalist John Muir. “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” The idea is important because what Powers means to explore is a sense of how we become who we are, individually and collectively, and our responsibility to the planet and to ourselves. Nick, for instance, continues a project begun by his grandfather to take repeated photographs of a single chestnut tree, “one a month for seventy-six years.” Pat, a visionary botanist, discovers how trees communicate with one another only to be discredited and then, a generation later, reaffirmed. What links the characters is survival—the survival of both trees and human beings. The bulk of the action unfolds during the timber wars of the late 1990s, as the characters coalesce on the Pacific coast to save old-growth sequoia from logging concerns. For Powers, however, political or environmental activism becomes a filter through which to consider the connectedness of all things—not only the human lives he portrays in often painfully intricate dimensions, but also the biosphere, both virtual and natural. “The world starts here,” Powers insists. “This is the merest beginning. Life can do anything. You have no idea.”
