KIRKUS REVIEW

Rossiter (Rugby & Rosie, 1997, etc.) gives readers a sympathetic story about the nursing of an injured Canada goose back to health, and the gander and boy that stuck by her. Geese mate for life, as Samuel learns when he discovers a bird that has been caught in some fishing line and has hurt her wing. With the help of his father, Sam cares for her, and for the gander that keeps her company. The boy quickly becomes attached to her and increasingly sad as the day comes for the goose and her mate to fly south for the winter. Will he ever see either of them again? Glowing drawings in shades of orange and gold provide a warm and rich backdrop for this compassionate story; Sam bids the geese good-bye, but a surprise awaits him come spring. Readers will cherish this hearty tale and the seasonal cycle it embraces. (Picture book. 5-9)
