Miami lawyer Jake Lassiter has settled into an unaccustomed groove, defending the likes of synthetic-estrogen manufacturers in liability suits, but excitement is just around the corner. First, Jake's 86-year-old client Sam Kazdoy, unretirable deli and theater owner, reports the theft of $1.6 million in bearer bonds, swiped from his place while he was enjoying the buxom embraces of Gal Friday Violet Belfrey. Then Jake's friend Humberto Hernandez- Zaldivar, a Cuban developer who's so overextended financially and legally that he has to cut a deal with the DEA, is killed during a routine sting. And when Jake punches out his least favorite client, the general counsel of Great Southern Bank, for taking Berto's name in vain, his days as a pencil-pusher are over. While his firm mulls his fate, he's committed to following the trail of Sam's stolen bonds, which soon leads to premiere windsurfer Keaka Kealia and his spectacular longtime companion, Lila Summers. Identifying Keaka as the bonds' bearer is only the beginning of Jake's troubles; but since Jake (Mortal Sin, 1994, etc.) has grown into something of an indestructible institution, readers won't have much to worry about while he hotfoots it from the Bahamas to Hawaii one step behind Keaka and Co. to register for a series of picturesque brushes with death. No trace of the wacky promise of Jake's earliest adventures, but if a dose of generic Travis McGee is what you crave, this'll do the job. (Author tour)
