THIRD STRIKE by Philip R. Craig

THIRD STRIKE

KIRKUS REVIEW

The tranquility of Martha’s Vineyard is disturbed by a ferry strike and a pair of murders.

Rumor has it that ex-President Callahan will be arriving to try to broker a settlement in the strike that’s paralyzed the Vineyard. When union president Eduardo Alvarez is killed by a bomb blast that damages a small ferry, his wife begs local ex-cop J.W. Jackson to find out what really happened. At the same time, J.W.’s friend, laid-back Boston lawyer Brady Coyne, fields a panicky request from former Red Sox pitcher Larry Bucyck, now living a Walden Pond fantasy on the Vineyard. While he was out night fishing, Larry saw a large, darkened boat unloading crates onto the dock of a nearby house. He’s scared that the Uzi-wielding guards spotted him as he fled. Soon after Brady goes out for a cup of coffee and returns to find his client dead, he and J.W. find that their cases are connected. A visit to the mystery house almost gets them killed, but the state police are still skeptical of their findings, especially when they visit the house in question only to find a well-known doctor in residence. J.W. and Brady must put the pieces together before the dangerous situation explodes.

An exciting third case (Second Sight, 2005, etc.) for a team reminiscent of Holmes and Watson, or Spenser and Hawk.
