Elisabeth Moss is producing a film adaptation of Emma Straub’s American Fantasy, Variety reports.
Straub’s novel, published in April by Riverhead, follows Annie, who impulsively decides to go on a cruise featuring a 1990s boy band and ends up connecting with one of its members, Keith. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the book “a delightfully nostalgic novel about how the things we loved in the past have the power to shape our future.”
Moss, the Emmy Award–winning actor known for her roles in the series The West Wing, Mad Men, and The Handmaid’s Tale, will produce the film adaptation alongside Lindsey McManus, with Straub on board as an executive producer.
“Emma’s honest yet humorous portrayal of the humbling experience of being a fan is so rare and genuinely fun to read that we knew we had to find a way to bring it to screen,” Moss and McManus said in a statement.
On Instagram, Straub revealed the origin of the adaptation, which was sparked by an encounter with Moss on Andy Cohen’s Bravo TV talk show, Watch What Happens Live.
“So hunky @bravoandy asks me about my book, and as I describe it, Elisabeth Freaking Moss turns and looks at me with this look on her face, this hmmmm yessss kind of look, and as soon as we finish filming, she pops out of her chair and says, my producing partner is here, your book sounds perfect for us,” Straub wrote. “I stammer something but do manage to hand over the two copies I’d brought with me, and a few days later, my phone rang. Kismet! Deranged happiness! Elisabeth Moss, the woman that you are!!!!”
