Jennette McCurdy wants to help readers look into themselves with a guided journal coming later this year.
William Morrow will publish the author and former actor’s The Examined Year: A Self-Discovery Tool in the fall, the press announced in a news release. It calls the book “a deeply personal and introspective guided journal and goal planning system that asks questions to help you build the life you want from the inside out.”
McCurdy first rose to fame as a child star of the Nickelodeon sitcom iCarly, which ran for six seasons; she also starred in its short-lived spinoff, Sam & Cat. In 2021, she revealed that she had retired from acting, saying, “I resent my career in a lot of ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most…cheesy, embarrassing [experience].”
She made her literary debut in 2022 with the memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died, about her fraught relationship with her emotionally abusive mother. The book became a bestseller and is being developed as a series by Apple TV+. She followed up her memoir with a novel, Half His Age, published in January.
Her guided journal, Morrow says, will be “a guide to understanding what you actually value. A grounded, simple system for setting and accomplishing goals that are genuinely yours. A record of who you’re becoming, what you’re learning, and what you’re ready to leave behind.”
The Examined Year is slated for publication on Dec. 8.
