The Rumpus is launching a Spanish-language initiative that will serve as “a dedicated platform for Latinx writers and readers,” the literary magazine announced in a news release.
The initiative, called El Alboroto, “will commission and publish original Spanish-language writing spanning cultural criticism, personal essays, interviews, fiction, poetry and comics.”
The Rumpus, which publishes book reviews, interviews, fiction, and poetry, was founded in 2009 by writer and filmmaker Stephen Elliott. The magazine was acquired last year by authors Roxane Gay, who now serves as editor, and Debbie Millman, who is the magazine’s culture editor and creative director.
El Alboroto will be edited by Alejandra Márquez and Vasthi Jean-Michel. In their inaugural editor’s note, they write, “It is an invitation to the Spanish-speaking community, within and outside the United States, to claim a space of its own within a magazine with more than a decade of history.”
“Rather than translating existing work from The Rumpus, El Alboroto will commission and publish original Spanish-language writing spanning cultural criticism, personal essays, interviews, fiction, poetry and comics,” The Rumpus says in its news release.
The first group of contributors to El Alboroto will be Francesca Dennstedt García, Andrea Villa Franco, Gabriela Boscio Santos, and Ave Barrera.
