The television adaptation of David Nicholls’ You Are Here has found its stars.
Matthew Macfadyen and Claire Foy will play the lead roles in the BBC/Starz series, Variety reports.
Nicholls’ novel, published in 2024 by Harper, follows Michael Bradshaw, a geography teacher who takes a long walk across England to help him cope with his recent divorce, and Marnie Walsh, a copy editor who joins him on his journey; the two eventually form a bond. A critic for Kirkus called the book “a relatable and satisfyingly realistic love story to cure any lingering lockdown blues.”
Macfadyen, known for his roles in series including Criminal Justice and Succession, will play Michael in the series, with Foy, a star of the series The Crown, portraying Marnie. Lenny Abrahamson, who previously adapted Emma Donoghue’s Room as a film and Sally Rooney’s Normal People as a limited series, will direct and executive-produce alongside Macfadyen and Foy.
Nicholls shared news of the casting on Instagram, writing, “I’ve been a huge admirer of director Lenny Abrahamson’s work for a long time, and I couldn’t be happier to be working with Claire Foy and Matthew Macfadyen as Marnie and Michael. Despite all the dialogue (because of all the dialogue) it has been a tough book to adapt - so much is unexpressed, and that’s in part the theme of the book, the difficulty of saying what one really feels. But that’s also the pleasure of adaptation and the thrill of working with amazing actors.”
