Former first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise visit to Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver, signing copies of her books and chatting with delighted shoppers and staffers.
Obama stopped by the famous store’s Colfax Avenue location, CBS News reports. The retailer, which is being bought by Barnes & Noble, has four locations in Colorado.
In a video posted to the social platform X on Friday, September 13, Obama reminisces about her last visit to the store, in 2018, after the publication of her memoir Becoming.
“My last visit, when I met these two little girls, Rowyn and Celiste,” she says. “If you guys are out there, give me an update…on how you guys are doing.”
Obama is shown signing copies of her 2022 book The Light We Carry before chatting with a bookseller who recommends novels including Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Obama then carries an armful of books while looking at a copy of Elizabeth Strout’s latest novel, Tell Me Everything.
The video concludes with Obama back in her car, saying, “That’s it. Hopefully the next time I talk to you, maybe it’ll be somewhere in the country at a bookstore near you. Until then, you guys be good. And remember to vote. Vote, vote. Love you guys. Bye.”
