Pope Leo XIV will release a collection of homilies and addresses written before he became the head of the Roman Catholic Church, the Guardian reports.
Penguin Random House’s Image imprint will publish the pontiff’s Freedom Under Grace: Reflections on the Spiritual Tradition That Formed Me in the fall. The press says that in the book, Leo “offers readers around the world a window into the spiritual foundation that would lead him to the papacy―in his own words before his election.”
The book will contain writings from Leo, born Robert F. Prevost, when he was prior general of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013, before he became a bishop, cardinal, and then pope.
“Drawing on the rich tradition of Saint Augustine,” the publisher says, “Prevost advances an inspiring vision rooted in community and solidarity, commitment to social justice for the poor and marginalized, and the confidence that the gospel of Jesus Christ is what the world most desperately needs to face today’s challenges.”
Leo published a collection of writings, Peace Be With You!: My Words to the Church and to the World, in February. Melville House recently announced plans to publish Leo’s papal encyclical on artificial intelligence, Magnifica Humanitas, in August.
Freedom Under Grace is slated for publication on Sept. 15.
