KIRKUS REVIEW

Ethnic pride shines through in these 14 sketches of contemporary Asian-Americans. The different walks of life covered range from sports (tennis superstar Michael Chang) to music (opera conductor Myung-Whun Chung), from politics (Sen. Daniel Inouye) to letters (Maxine Hong Kingston); also included are actors and a TV personality (Connie Chung), an astronaut, an architect (I. M. Pei), and an illustrator (JosÇ Aruego). Several nationalities are represented, including Filipino, Cambodian, and Vietnamese. While each profile successfully conveys the inner strength and intellectual vitality of the subject, the book as a whole is somewhat unbalanced: only some of the people profiled granted interviews, and the lack of intimacy where interviews were not possible is apparent. Still, a worthwhile, sure-to-be- useful collection. Bibliography; index. Photos not seen. (Biography. 10+)
