KIRKUS REVIEW

Yet another King biography, this one lifted above the ordinary by the passion and dignity of King's own rhetoric--extensive quotations from books, speeches, and letters worked into Haskins's spare narrative of King's family history, life events, and beliefs. The b&w photos that occupy more than one-third of the book are carefully juxtaposed with the appropriate text; a number of their captions also contain quotes. Though many of the photos are familiar, the 8 1/2'' x 11'' format and the quality of paper and reproduction here give them renewed impact. Not a source for those wishing to delve into the complexities of events or character, but an excellent verbal and visual presentation of the essentials of King's life and times. A memoir by Rosa Parks serves as introduction. Chronology; bibliographies; sources of pictures and quotations; index. (Biography. 10+)
