Winsome duo Bink and Gollie are back, this time zipping through a day at the state fair (Bink & Gollie, 2010).

Messy-mopped Bink goes immediately to the Whack-a-Duck game. After all, the prize is the world’s largest donut. In a brilliant spread that shows every step of her comical windup, Bink’s pitch explodes with energy. She is endearingly hopeful, but … not exactly on target. The next chapter is Gollie’s turn to shine. She enters the talent show with stars in her eyes. But when she opens her mouth on stage, nothing comes out—though her expressions are priceless. Luckily there is a much more forgiving audience right around the corner. The last story showcases Bink and Gollie together. Madame Prunely tells them their fortune. (“Destiny?” asks Bink. “Is it a ride?” / “In a manner of speaking,” replies Gollie.) However, these two best friends don’t need to hear much about their future. They have each other and that’s all that matters. It’s difficult to match the exuberance of first meeting (or reading) this winning pair, but Bink and Gollie’s second adventure won’t disappoint. Utterly chuckle-worthy, charming and (thank goodness) still refreshing.

As ever, the force of nostalgia is strong; the force of narrative, not so much.

The tale of the only Guardian of Childhood to be a child himself turns out to be hinged on battles and transformations.

With flights of baroque fancy in both language and art, the story opens with Nightlight, oath-bound protector of the rotund lad who would become the Man in the Moon, locked in “fierce and valiant” battle with would-be kidnapper Pitch, the Nightmare King. The long, recuperative sleep that follows changes Nightlight to Jackson Overland Frost—a wild, lonely spirit who wanders the Earth spreading winter until the rescue of a family of errant children gives him fresh purpose: to protect not just one child, but all of them, “For they are all that I have, all that I am, / And all that I will ever be.” An elfin, slender figure in tight trousers and a stylish hoodie, his tousled silver locks in definite need of a trim or at least a comb, Jack seems to have stepped from some manga to pose theatrically amid late-autumnal sprays of mist and dramatic, cloudy curlicues. Nonetheless, the children’s elegant, Edwardian dress and references to a lost Golden Age in the mannered narrative intensify the retro atmosphere common to this series.

SADAKO'S CRANES

A pretty but overworked addition to the well-stocked shelf of tributes to a silent but nonetheless eloquent voice for peace.

The story of “Hiroshima’s most famous victim” is matched to delicate sepia illustrations decorated with images of brightly patterned origami cranes.

Oozing sentimentality so gooey it’s a wonder the pages can be separated, this version of the often told tale is narrated by Sadako's cat. It opens with a peaceful August morning overshadowed by a “huge black cloud” before cutting ahead 10 years to Sadako’s hospitalization. The cat curls up in her lap to share visions of future outings together (which seems at best an insensitive brand of comfort). The cat recounts how the girl “fell gently asleep and flew away with 1000 paper cranes” and then embarks on a mission to “carry Sadako’s story out into the world.” Though the numerous folded cranes shine out against pale backdrops in the fine-lined illustrations, Loske depicts the cat as disquietingly eyeless until a final view and, along with Sadako and the other white-faced human figures, with fiery red cheek patches that look like clown makeup. In her afterword, the author assures readers that Sadako “actually lived,” but this mannered, anemic portrayal of that life isn’t likely to make them care.
