After her sister Star finds herself, Celaeno, aka CeCe, whose career as a painter has stalled, is free to follow the directive left by her late adoptive father, Pa Salt. (Series readers will recall that Pa Salt, a shipping magnate, adopted seven girls as infants, naming them after stars in the Pleiades constellation.) CeCe is instructed to research Kitty Mercer, who lived in Broome, a northwestern Australian town renowned for its pearl fishing industry. After a romantic interlude with an eccentric Bangkok billionaire, CeCe arrives in Australia, where additional clues lead her to the town of Alice Springs and its surrounding desert, the Never Never. There, while discovering her artistic heritage through aboriginal paintings, she learns of a mixed-race man who may be her grandfather. CeCe’s story meshes with sections devoted to Kitty, beginning in 1906. The daughter of a philandering minister, she journeys from Scotland to Australia, where she marries into a German-Australian pearling family, the Mercers, setting up household in Broome with husband Andrew. She gives birth to son Charlie after providing shelter to an aboriginal girl, Camira, and her infant, called Alkina (Moon) but nicknamed Cat for her large amber eyes. Cat and Charlie grow up together and become inseparable. When Charlie reaches adulthood, his determination to wed Cat once more upends Kitty’s destiny. Kitty’s tangled history and its equally snarled connections to CeCe’s origins unravel at a leisurely pace, with much lore about pearl fishing, aboriginal culture, and Australian race relations adding interest.

Meredith, heir apparent to her family’s thriving Washington State apple enterprises, and Nina, a globetrotting photojournalist, grew up feeling marginalized by their mother. Anya saw her daughters as merely incidental to her grateful love for their father Evan, who rescued her from a German prison camp. Anya, now elderly but of preternaturally youthful appearance—her white hair has been that way as long as the girls can remember—keeps babbling about leather belts boiled for soup, furniture broken up for firewood and other oddities. Prompted by her daughters’ snooping and a few vodka-driven dinners, she grudgingly divulges her story. She is not Anya, but Vera, sole survivor of a Russian family; her father, grandmother, mother, sister, husband and two children were all lost either to Stalin’s terror or during the German army’s siege of Leningrad. Anya’s chronicle of the 900-day siege, during which more than half a million civilians perished from hunger and cold, imparts new gravitas to the novel, easily overwhelming her daughters’ more conventional “issues.” The effect, however, is all but vitiated by a manipulative and contrived ending.

A flawed but never dull drama.

A disadvantaged teen finds friendship, acceptance and love with a prosperous Seattle-area family, until a tragic accident changes everything.

Alexa (Lexi) Baill, daughter of a heroin addict, has bounced around the foster-care system for years. A long-lost great aunt, Eva, a Walmart employee, offers Lexi a home in her trailer across the bridge from Pine Island (Hannah’s fictional stand-in for Bainbridge Island) near Seattle. At Pine Island High School, Mia, daughter of Jude and Miles Farraday, and twin sister of Zachary, considers herself an outcast. She bonds instantly with the equally alienated Lexi. Soon, the Farraday’s opulent Pine Island residence is Lexi’s second home. As senior year approaches, Lexi and Zach fall in love and are relieved that Mia approves. Jude, whose days are a pleasant whirl of caring for her elaborate garden and being a supermom, has a strained relationship with her own mother. As seniors, Zach, Mia and Lexi can’t avoid Pine Island’s teen party scene. One foggy night, Zach and Mia get falling-down drunk, and Lexi, less inebriated, urges Zach to let her drive his Mustang home. (The question of who actually drove is left vague, which dodges several moral bullets, to the story’s detriment.) On a hairpin curve, the Mustang spins out and crashes. Mia is thrown from the backseat and killed. Zach and Lexi sustain milder injuries, but Lexi’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit, and she accepts the blame for killing Mia. Jude turns against her implacably. Lexi, unwilling to burden Eva with the expense of a trial, pleads guilty to vehicular homicide and serves over five years in prison. While incarcerated, she gives birth to Zach’s child, Grace, and relinquishes her to the Farradays. Grace bears such an uncanny resemblance to Mia that Jude finds it almost impossible to warm to her. Released from prison, Lexi returns to Pine Island, only to find that her daughter is as isolated and distrustful as any foster child. 

A flawed but never dull drama.
