The Golden Globe nominations were announced Monday morning, with One Battle After Another leading literary adaptations with nine nods for the Hollywood awards.
One Battle After Another, which is very loosely based on Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel, Vineland, scored nominations in categories including best musical or comedy motion picture, and Paul Thomas Anderson was nominated for best screenplay and best director. Actors earning nominations for the film were Chase Infiniti, Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro, and Sean Penn.
Hamnet, based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, earned six nominations, including best drama motion picture, best director (Chloé Zhao), best screenplay (Zhao and O’Farrell), and acting nods for Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal.
Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was nominated in five categories, including best drama motion picture and best director, with Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi nominated for their acting performances. Wicked: For Good, the second installment of the film based on the musical adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel, also earned five nods, including cinematic and box office achievement, and acting nominations for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Other film adaptations to earn nominations were Train Dreams, based on Denis Johnson’s novella; No Other Choice, based on Donald E. Westlake’s The Ax; Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, based on Warren Zanes’ nonfiction book; Die My Love, based on Ariana Harwicz’s novel of the same title; Hedda, based on Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama, Hedda Gabler; and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, based on Amélie Nothomb’s The Character of Rain.
Television series adaptations scoring nods were Slow Horses, based on Mick Herron’s novels; All Her Fault, based on Andrea Mara’s novel; and The Girlfriend, based on Michelle Frances’ novel.
