Brandon Sanderson’s Skyward is headed to the small screen, Deadline reports.
Sanderson’s young-adult science-fiction novel, published in 2018 by Delacorte, follows Spensa “Spin” Nightshade, a young woman who aspires to become a pilot and join humanity’s war against aliens. In a starred review of the book, the first in a series, a Kirkus critic wrote, “Sanderson plainly had a ball with this nonstop, highflying opener, and readers will too.”
The series adaptation is being developed by Tomorrow Studios, known for its shows One Piece and Snowpiercer. Sanderson will write the script for the pilot alongside Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen; Weldon and Tancharoen have previously collaborated on series including Dollhouse and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. All three will also executive-produce.
Sanderson’s novels set in the Cosmere universe are being developed for film and television by Apple TV. On his website, he says that the screenplay for the Cosmere novel adaptation Mistborn is 72% finished.
Sanderson shared news of the Skyward adaptation on the social platform X, writing, “I’ve been working on the Skyward series for nearly a decade, and to have a partner like Tomorrow Studios to help bring this story to television is a dream come true.”
