Rick Riordan will return to the world of Percy Jackson with a new series coming later this year, the Associated Press reports.
Random House Children’s Books will publish four new children’s books written by Riordan with four other authors. The books will form the Camp Half-Blood series; the first installment, The Wild Zone, co-written with Annabelle Oh, is set for publication in the fall.
The Percy Jackson series, about a boy who discovers that he is a demigod and is sent to a summer camp for others like him, kicked off in 2005 with The Lightning Thief; four more novels followed. Riordan subsequently wrote or co-wrote other series set in the same world, including Heroes of Olympus, Trials of Apollo, Nico di Angelo Adventures, and Senior Year Adventures.
The original series spawned two films, which Riordan says he’s never seen because he disapproved of the screenplays, and a Disney+ television series, which began airing in 2023.
The Camp Half-Blood series will take place between the first two novels in the original series. “It made me wonder what was happening back at camp between the books of the original series, when Percy, Annabeth, and Grover weren’t around,” Riordan told the AP. “This new series gives me a chance to explore that idea, while opening up Percy’s world by introducing a new group of demigod heroes, co-created with amazing authors who can write authentically about those heroes’ backgrounds.”
Other authors set to collaborate with Riordan on the Camp Half-Blood series include Kyle Lukoff, Jade Adia, and Pablo Cartaya.
The Wild Zone will follow five new demigods who do battle with a variety of bloodthirsty monsters after entering the titular forbidden territory. It is set for publication on Sept. 29.
