Tessa Thompson will star in and produce a film adaptation of Katie Kitamura’s A Separation, Deadline reports.

Kitamura’s novel, published in 2017 by Riverhead, tells the story of a woman who has separated from her husband but travels to Greece to find him after receiving word that he has disappeared. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “A minutely observed novel of infidelity unsettles its characters and readers.”

Thompson is known for her roles in films including Dear White People, Selma, and Hedda, and on the television series Copper, Westworld, and His & Hers. She leads the cast of the adaptation, which is being written and directed by Jonas Carpignano (Mediterranea, A Ciambra).

“Jonas and Tessa are two of the boldest and most original artists working today,” Kitamura told Deadline. “I feel very lucky to be part of this extraordinary collaboration, and to be working with such an exceptional team of producers to bring this novel onto the big screen.”

Kitamura’s latest novel, Audition, shortlisted for the Booker Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award, is also being developed as a film, to be directed by Lulu Wang and starring Lucy Liu and Charles Melton.
